Little League Softball® strengthens self-esteem, promotes teamwork and sportsmanship, and develops on-field fundamentals while providing a competitive outlet for girls.
About Little League Softball®
Founded in 1974, the program has more than 25,000 softball teams and 300,000 participants worldwide. Working to grow the game of softball at the grassroots level, Little League® has collaborated with more than 25 countries to create a foundation for success. Little League Softball includes divisions of play for girls ages 4 to 16, which culminates at three Softball World Series tournaments for international competition and friendship.
Little League Softball® Divisions
Little League Softball currently operates five tournament divisions as part of the International Tournament where teams must play to advance through District, Section, State, Region, and World Series tournaments. Three divisions culminate at a Softball World Series where athletes will make lasting memories, create life-long friendships, compete against the best teams from nine US and International regions and one league will be crowned World Champions. With more than 150 softball games broadcast on the ESPN family of networks, including every game at each of the US Softball Regional tournaments and the three Softball World Series, this is the most aired youth softball tournament.
AGES 4-7
Tee Ball is the entry level division for players that focuses on fun, fitness, and fundamentals.
AGES 5-11
The goal of the Minor League is to prepare players for eventual selection to a Major Division team.
AGES 9-12
The culmination of the International Tournament is the Little League Softball World Series.
AGES 12-14
The Junior League Division uses a conventional 60-foot diamond with a 43 foot pitching distance.
AGES 13-16
The Senior League Division uses a conventional 60-foot diamond with a 43 foot pitching distance.
Athletes Unlimited Softball League
With the continued rise of women’s sports, Little League® is proud of its official partnership with Athletes Unlimited, which began with the league’s launch in 2020, bringing together Little League Softball® players and the world’s best softball athletes to grow excitement around the game and increase both accessibility and racial diversity in the sport. In 2025, Athletes Unlimited launched the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL), the premier professional women’s softball league in the United States.

Throughout the docuseries, each episode covers a span of time that focuses on what was happening within the program as well as historical moments that may have influenced the program and its development.
