Little League® Urban Initiative Jamboree Comes to Pearland, Texas

Little League® Baseball and Softball will hold its Urban Initiative Texas State Jamboree at the Pearland (Texas) Little League Fields on May 31-June 2.

One of nine Urban Initiative Jamborees being held throughout the United States this spring, participants in the Texas State Jamboree will take part in a weekend of games and other special events at no cost to their local league. Baseball Factory, the Official Player Development Partner of Little League, will lead an instructional clinic for the attending Little Leaguers®, as well.

“The Little League Urban Initiative has a long track record of success in Texas, and we’re thrilled to host these players at Pearland Little League this weekend,” said Frank Velasquez, Council of Houston Inner City Little Leagues (C.H.I.L.L.) President. “The Jamboree gives Little Leaguers from throughout the state of Texas the chance to play in a tournament atmosphere that they otherwise might not have.”

At the end of the weekend, one team will win the championship banner. Games begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 31 and resume on Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m. The Jamboree Awards Barbecue will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 1 p.m. The Championship Game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. This year marks the 10th anniversary of C.H.I.L.L., which was started when representatives from nine Houston-area Little Leagues got together in the fall of 2002 to informally established a network to help each other with game scheduling, best practices for running their leagues, exchanging ideas about fundraising and supporting their common efforts and goals for having a successful program. C.H.I.L.L. has become one of the pioneering groups in embracing the Urban Initiative mission in aiding their local leagues to ensure that the area’s youth has the best Little League experience possible, on-field and off.

“We are working to foster the youth program so that children learn moral values through organized youth baseball and softball games,” said Mr. Velasquez. “We plan on continuing our work in organizing youth sports activities, assist member leagues in training volunteers in the Little League program and be a portal for members to receive educational and sports resources.”

Established in 1999, the Little League Urban Initiative provides financial and educational assistance to local leagues in order to give all children, even those in disadvantaged neighborhoods, a chance to play baseball and softball. The Little League Urban Initiative has helped establish more than 300 leagues where there are more than 52,000 kids playing on upwards of 4,000 teams within urban environments.

“What C.H.I.L.L. does for their local Little Leaguers is amazing,” said Demiko Ervin, Little League Urban Initiative Director. “These volunteers go above and beyond to make sure that boys and girls have opportunities to participate in baseball and softball. The Jamboree is just one example of their tireless work, but they are dedicated all year long to the goal of improving these children’s lives through our sport.”
