Host Delaware Downs Puerto Rico 11-6 in Big League Softball World Series Championship

The hometown favorites are now world champs, thanks to a late-inning rally.

Delaware, the host team of the Big League Softball Little World Series, scored six runs in the fifth inning as they downed Puerto Rico 11-6 at Bruce E. Layton Field in Sussex County, Del.

The win completed a perfect 5-0 tournament for the hometown team, and it was the Latin American region champs’ first loss.

With the score tied 5-5 in the fifth inning, Delaware's Tiara Duffy singled in Kimberly Gallo to score the go-ahead run, but the hometown team didn't stop there. First, Karlie Smith drove in Alexis Burger to make it 7-5. Then, Kaitlyn Slater hit a bases-clearing double. In the next at-bat, Mykala Steele hit a two-run homer to cap off the six-run fifth inning.

Ms. Steele wasn't the only player on the host team to hit a devastating shot, though. Cailey Isaacs belted a three-run dinger to get things started in the second inning, giving Delaware its initial 3-1 lead.

But the Latin America Region Champion, again, pulled ahead in the game, scoring four runs in the third inning, all on two outs, including a two-run double from Kiara Resto. Puerto Rico also got some help from Janiliz Rivera, who belted a two-run homer after Resto's double.

After a quiet third inning from Delaware’s offense, the host team scored two runs in the fourth inning and Ms. Steele shut down Puerto Rico's bats in the fifth. She allowed just one walk and quickly worked out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Delaware bats came alive again to break the 5-5 tie, retiring the side with a score of 11-5.

In the sixth inning, Puerto Rico could only manage one base runner on a hit-by-pitch. In the bottom half of the sixth, Delaware failed to capitalize as well; only Burger was able to reach base.

But Puerto Rico didn’t go down without a fight.

After Ms. Steele walked Krizia Rivera with one out, Janiliz Rivera hit into a force out off of Hailey Andrews that allowed Krizia Rivera to score. However, Ms. Andrews was able to get Dayanira Figueroa to fly out for the game's final out.

Ms. Steele got the win for Delaware, despite recording just two strikeouts in 6.1 innings. She allowed eight hits and six runs — all of them earned. Puerto Rico's Yaidi Flores suffered the loss.

Ms. Burger, Ms. Slater, Ms. Duffy and Ms. Isaacs all collected two hits for the world champs. IMs. saacs paved the way, driving in three runs with her homer. Ms. Slater and MS. Steele each drove in a pair of runs. Ms. Isaacs, Ms. Slater and Ms. Burger also all scored twice for Delaware.

For Puerto Rico, Resto finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI. Janiliz Rivera recorded two RBI, and Resto and Janiliz Rivera were the only members of the team from Latin America with RBI.

Six different Puerto Rican players scored runs in the loss, their first and only of the tournament.
